Parenthood ain't all roses

So we got Maja home and everything was going great. She did get a little gassy the first night because the pizza place screwed up and instead of making Canadian bacon, they made just plain bacon. Poor Maja decided that the combination was wrong and let us know about it for hours. She was so gassy she would have made Cousin Ryan blush. And all through the next day she was getting fussier and fussier. Finally at about 11 pm we gave her a sponge bath and found the poor little girl had a fever. We made the call and then took her into the hospital. They ran a BUNCH of tests and then admitted our daughter into the NICU. For those like me, NICU stands for something like "newborn intensive care unit". Aga and I were pretty much going nuts at this point. It turns out that Aga's milk hadn't quite fully come in until Monday afternoon. So that, combined with the stress of coming home AND having the gas attack caused her to become completely dehydrated. I tell you guys, there is nothing that has ever happened in my life that could EVER prepare me for seeing my newborn daughter get an IV into her arm. They found that her blood chemistry was completely out of whack because of her getting so dry. It still takes me by aback because she was still nursing every 2 hours or so before we took her in. Everybody at the hospital has said how strong she is, she was able to pick her head up off my chest an hour after she was born. But even so, she went dry in a matter of hours while feeding the whole time. It is still just so hard to completely grasp.

They have a Hotel built into the top floor of our hospital, so Aga and I have been checked in for the last few days. Thank God Aga's Mom was here, she has stayed at our place and taken care of the Pets for us. It allowed us to stay near Maja and let Aga continue breastfeeding. This is all after Aga has just given birth and is under doctors' orders to stay rested. There was not enough elephants in India to drag her away from our daughter.

So on top of all of that, she got what they called a "spinal headache", which means that her spinal fluid was leaking out. Last time I checked it was put in there for a reason. It was definitely NOT what was needed at that point, we were still shaken up from Maja and then the only other person I have in the world drops on me. So so so scary. The doctor explained it to me that it causes the same type of headache that drug addicts get when they are in withdrawal. She had been putting up with that since we left the hospital. Yet again, she can be so damn tough that it amazes me. To fix it, they pulled some blood out of her arm and injected it in her spinal column. It worked on the first try, and she was basically able to walk again 10 minutes later.

So it's been about 36 hours right now, feels like years though. Maja has done so well and is looking so much better. She is about due to have the IV removed, and then they are going to monitor her for a while to make sure she will be fine on her own. We are expecting to get her home tomorrow. THANK GOD FOR THAT!!! I know can speak for the both of us when I say we are just looking forward to just being able to have our family together, safe at home.
