Maja and I have a bit of a game on the weekend. We try to get up at the butt crack of dawn and see who can keep the other awake. So far she is kicking my ass. Usually, I get up and let Aga sleep for a bit, she is sleeping for 2 now so we got to keep her strength up. I grabbed Maja and headed downstairs. Aga has started this new thing with her over the last week or so that has turned out to be so dang cute. I started out getting her morning bottle ready, told Maja to get her pillow. Her pillow happens to be one of those "C" shaped nursing pillows that somehow fits her perfectly when she lays down. So we walked over to the pillow, she plops down on it and looks up at me with her hand out, so I gave her the bottle and she snuggled in tight and had her morning pick me up.
Now, the funny thing is that over the course of my normal day, I drink WAY too much caffiene. If I wait too long I get a little.... out of sorts. By this point of my morning I was half a minute away from a full on, arms out, moaning "BRRRAAAIIINNNNNSSSSS" zombification. So I poured myself a mug and went to lay on the couch next to Maja. Both of us nursing, she on her bottle, me on the coffee.
After a while we both felt somewhat refreshed and decided to start poking around for breakfast. I love the fact that she's a walker now, it makes things so much easier. So if you know me, you know that (especially in the morning) I will stand in front of an open refrigerator and stare at it. I know I do it, maybe something deep down in me is hoping something will get tired of it and jump up to yell "Eat Me". Well I guess Maja decided to take pity on me, because after wandering between the pantry and the 'fridge a couple of times she took matters into her own hands and came out with a bag of pretzels.
Now I have never claimed to be father of the year, but I swear to you that to my zombied up brain this was not only ok, this was a
good idea. I probably justified it by some weird, roundabout connection to cereal. Hell, I am pretty sure I thanked her, but at least some Daddy-like instinct was clawing its way to the front... "I need to cook something,
THAT will make me a good father". Eggs? nope. bacon? uh-uh. My dumbass decided on these
Potstickers that we had in the freezer. I even remember thinking of being proud because they are
vegetarian potstickers. And hell, it even says "all natural" right on the bag, so they have got to be good, right? Aga should have
thanked me....
I need to take a moment here to say that my daughter is learning sign language, I have always thought this to be at best a waste of time, and at its worst to be counter-productive to the whole communication thing.
So there we are, eating a fine meal of pretzel and potstickers. Mommy is sound asleep upstairs and quite unable to intervene. Maja decided pretty quickly that she doesn't like the pasta part of the 'stickers, so I was busy sawing them open so we could get at the stuff inside (and yes I would eat the pasta part, waste not want not and all). So I raise a forkful of stuff to Maja's lips. She must have realized what was going on and pulled back while giving me the signal for *all done*. Of course I have seen this kid put the better half of a can of corn down, there is no way she is full, so I tried again. Little sucker did it again! Pulled away and *all done*. Then she tries to confuse me further, *more*, *please*, *food*, *more*. Uh oh, she must be confused. I went back in with the 'sticker guts. Same result- *all done*. We went back and forth like this 3-4 times, when finally she gives out this loud sigh, *food* *please*, pushes the fork out of the way and reaches for the bag of (highly nutritious I swear) pretzels!
This is HUGE for me. Usually my feeding sessions consist of feeding her one thing until she gets tired of it, then switching to then next item and so on. I know it isn't the most exciting way to eat, but it's the way I have eaten for almost 30 years. Fortunately my Daughter is somewhat normal and so doesn't like this method of eating. So dinner is a lot of grunts and sometimes crying, Maja can get worked up as well. So for her to remain completely calm in the face of my early morning idiocy and actually be able to communicate what the heck she wants is simply awesome. As soon as I gave her a couple of the pretzel sticks, she awarded me her most beautiful smile followed up by a wonderful babbling of Daddydaddaddy...
God I love this girl.
